Royal Philips announced on Monday that it is partnering with Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Brigham & Women’s Hospital (BWH) to increase the adoption of digital pathology in the U.S.
The partnering health systems will each install the Philips IntelliSite Pathology Solution for both research and clinical purposes.
“There is tremendous opportunity not only to improve lab efficiency through increased access to information and images that eliminate the chance of materials being lost, broken, or misfiled, but also to dramatically enhance patient care through the deployment of advanced algorithms,” Dr. Jeff Golden, chair of pathology at BWH, said in a statement.

As part of this partnership, digital pathology centers will be established and structured around major themes in the digital pathology space, including user interface design, analytics, education, and economics of digital pathology.
MGH and BWH personnel will work with Philips engineers and scientists on executing projects in those new centers.
The health systems will leverage the Philips IntelliSite Pathology Solution to encourage collaboration between pathologists and access expert opinions on patient cases. They will also develop teaching and training sets to educate pathologists worldwide on digital pathology.
The IntelliSite Pathology Solution is the first and only digital pathology solution marketed for primary diagnostic use in the U.S., according to Philips. It’s interoperable with various information systems and is equipped with an ultra-fast pathology slide scanner and an image management system and display.
The solution helps pathologists manage, scan, store, present, review and share information between lab networks. As a result, it helps labs and health systems improve the speed and quality of diagnoses.
