Clarius Mobile Health has unveiled Clarius L20 HD, a device that it is calling the world’s first ultrahigh frequency handheld ultrasound scanner.
The solution is designed to provide ultrahigh-definition medical imaging for superficial applications through apps for iOS and Android. It can be used in a variety of clinical settings, including MSK, rheumatology, podiatry, plastic surgery, microsurgery, pediatric anesthesia and line placement.
“While all Clarius scanners deliver high-definition ultrasound imaging, the Clarius L20 is an ultrahigh frequency linear scanner that delivers unmatched image clarity of superficial anatomy for applications like microvascular imaging and performing nerve blocks for surgery,” Clarius Mobile Health CEO Laurent Pelissier told HCB News. “Plastic surgeons, microsurgeons, rheumatologists, and other specialty physicians who previously had to rely on costly cart-based systems for medical imaging at that resolution can now take ultrasound anywhere for just $6,900 with our easy-to-use apps for iOS and Android on their mobile devices."
Ultrahigh frequency imaging for superficial imaging has traditionally only been available on costly premium systems, according to Clarius Mobile Health, making it difficult for providers with limited funds and resources to adopt.
Clarius L20 HD is available for $6,900 in the U.S., £5,750 in the U.K., and €6,250 in the EU. This represents a more than 80% savings compared to the starting price of $35,000 for traditional and cart-based systems.
The wireless scanner has a frequency range of 8-20 MHz, enabling it to image the skin line down to 4 cm with extremely high image quality to visualize shallow anatomy. Images are comparable to those of premium cart-based systems, the company says, but without complex knobs and switches. It also is equipped with AI to adjust imaging parameters in real time based on scanning applications.
Supporting the strong image quality is the design of the system, which consists of Clarius Octal Beamforming technology. This provides advanced beamforming capabilities typically only seen in high-end cart-based systems. The solution features eight octal beams and 192 elements for faster frame rates and high-definition image quality.
