United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia, New York has kicked off what is estimated to be an $8 million expansion of its radiology department.
The division will add 5,000 square feet, with the first phase scheduled to kick off halfway through 2022. The entire project is expected to be completed by 2024,
according to The Daily News.
“The main unit we’re upgrading with this renovation will be our MR scanner. Even though it’s not the most attractive unit in the house, it does the job,” Dr. Barry Rosenberg, UMMC chief of radiology, said in a statement. “However, it is 20 years old, and we are getting a state-of-the-art, new unit, which will now be incorporated within the structure of the department.”

The expansion includes a new MR suite, a 10-bed ICU, a blood draw station, dressing rooms, a welcoming area and scheduling office, and cooling infrastructure to support UMMC and the growth of its services on the main campus.
The department will be completely renovated and expanded, according to Rosenberg, and will be separated from the rest of the emergency room patients and in-patients. It will also have a different place for outpatient, non-stat cases to be sitting in order to create better workflow, greater access for patients and enhanced comfort.
It has expanded its physician staff and the specialties that it covers. “There are very few specialties that we don’t have covered in this facility, which means that radiology has to keep up with everybody else who’s on staff,” said Rosenberg. “The whole point to this is for our community to have what they deserve right here in Batavia — the best healthcare possible and, with very, very few exceptions, people in this community will not have to drive to Rochester and will be able to get the same care here that they would elsewhere, with the same high quality.
UMMC is a little over 30 minutes outside of Rochester.
It previously upgraded most of its radiology equipment with fluoroscopy units that emit the least amount of radiation possible for studies and 3D mammography scanners. It also recently upgraded its nuclear medicine facility.
