According to the researchers, further studies are warranted to not only better understand how factors in ICU may improve end-of-life care outside the ICU in the hospital, but also assisted-care settings, including home hospice care, and to help reduce overall hospitalizations.

Other researchers of the study include Mary Ersek, PhD, of the division of General Internal Medicine, the Philadelphia VA Medical Center, and Penn's School of Nursing, and Melissa W. Wachterman, MD, of the Veterans Affairs Boston Healthcare System and Brigham and Women's Hospital.

The study was supported by funding from the Otto Haas Charitable Trust to the PAIR Center.
