OAK BROOK, Ill – October 10, 2019 - The Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Research & Education (R&E) Foundation awarded the 2019 Hitachi Healthcare Americas/RSNA Research Seed Grants to Elizabeth Tong, M.D. and Jie C. Nguyen, M.D., M.S. These grants are made possible by Hitachi Healthcare Americas’ support of the RSNA R&E Foundation.
The Hitachi Healthcare Americas/RSNA Research Seed Grant provides $40,000 for a one-year project to test hypotheses and obtain pilot data in preparation for major grant applications.
Elizabeth Tong, M.D., Stanford University, with scientific advisor Greg Zaharchuk, M.D., Ph.D., will develop a stroke scale based on functional MR imaging (FMRISS) to assess abnormal neural circuitry in acute ischemic stroke. Jie C. Nguyen, M.D., M.S., Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, will investigate the diagnostic accuracy of ionizing radiation-free methods for bone imaging, using ultra-short echo-time (UTE) MR pulse sequence, to delineate bony margins in osteosarcoma, the most common primary malignant bone
tumor in children. Successful completion will result in a radiation-free, clinically feasible tool that generates high-resolution bone images and microstructural information that can be used to longitudinally monitor disease status and could be applied to other applications relating to bone health.
