Elekta has acquired ProKnow Systems with the aim of growing its cloud-based treatment planning analytics for advanced radiation therapy.

ProKnow’s products, including ProKnow DS, let users take a “big data” approach to oncology practice by permitting analysis of collective data from patient groups. This allows both workflow streamlining and better contour accuracy and treatment-plan fine-tuning.

The technology is vendor-agnostic.

“We are very pleased to join the Elekta team,” Ben Nelms, Ph.D., co-founder and director at ProKnow said in a statement, adding that the two companies already have a history of “fruitful” collaboration — including developing programs for improvements to anatomy contouring and treatment plan quality. “We are excited to help stimulate Elekta’s ambitious digital road map, and to provide the radiation therapy community with some of the most innovative, useful, and intuitive tools they have ever seen,” he added.

The move is seen as accelerating Elekta Digital's moves into both big data and AI. “The solutions that ProKnow brings are especially well-suited to many of our large customers and their need for data management, analytics and workflow automation across their oncology networks,” said Elekta CEO Richard Hausmann, adding, “we’re also looking forward to accessing the expertise and competencies within the ProKnow team to continue enhancing analytics under the Elekta umbrella.”

In other Elekta news, in July, C-RAD gave Elekta Na href="https://www.dotmed.com/news/story/47910" target="blank">the right to distribute its surface image-guided radiation therapy technology to providers for use in stereotactic radiosurgery, stereotactic body radiotherapy, and motion management.

Beginning in the North American and Mexican markets, the agreement brings together the benefits of C-RAD’s Catalyst HD system, which integrates with Elekta linacs, and those of Elekta’s Versa HD high-definition dynamic radiosurgery solution.

"Accuracy is key when escalating dose," Dee Mathieson, senior vice president of treatment solutions at Elekta, told HCB News at the time. "The X-ray products complement the patient set up and motion management capabilities of the Versa HD to give confidence to the clinicians."
