From a research perspective, Dr. Gray primarily focuses on breast cancer, sarcomas and melanoma, as well as reducing pain in treatment and recurrence following treatment. He has published more than 140 research manuscripts in medical journals, including the Journal of the National Cancer Institute and JAMA Surgery.
Dr. Gray first came to Mayo Clinic in Arizona in 1995 as a surgical intern and completed his residency and a fellowship in surgical oncology at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. Then, after a second fellowship in surgical oncology at the Moffitt Cancer Center, he joined the staff at Mayo Clinic in 2001. He is chair of the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center in Arizona, chair of Mayo's Breast Specialty Council, and the vice chair of the Department of Surgery in Arizona.
During Dr. Decker's tenure as CEO of Mayo Clinic in Arizona, the Arizona practice further demonstrated its role as a destination for complex medical care, caring for patients from every state and more than 70 countries around the world. Mayo Clinic Hospital in Arizona rapidly advanced on U.S. News and World Report's "Best Hospitals" rankings, increasing from No. 20 nationally to No. 11 in a single year. Also, the hospital achieved the No. 1 ranking in Arizona for a sixth year in 2018, and it is consistently recognized for the highest level of patient safety among academic medical centers.
