Frost & Sullivan outline 10 growth factors for precision imaging market

The precision medical imaging market is predicted to skyrocket in the near future from its 2017 value of $120 million to more than $8 billion by 2027.

The driving force behind it is not one factor, however, but instead, 10, as asserted by Frost & Sullivan in its analysis, "Growth Opportunities in Precision Medical Imaging, Forecast to 2022", which elaborates on the role of medical imaging in precision medicine and where it holds the strongest leverage in the market.

"Given the growth opportunities outlined, providers can benefit from better utilisation of medical imaging assets, reduced adverse effects from imaging procedures, enhanced patient satisfaction and experience, and on the clinical side better outcomes through earlier detection and precise prediction of treatment outcomes and tailored patient care pathways," Siddharth Saha, vice president of Research, Transformational Health, told HCB News.

Among the many areas expected to benefit from these opportunities is evidence-based study ordering, which will lead to more efficient models for connecting imaging activities to specific patient needs. Alongside it will be the advancement of imaging techniques and personalized image acquisition protocols; the development of adaptive, anatomical and applied machine intelligence; and image-based, 3D-printed implants and anatomical guides that consist of patient-tailored, made-to-fit devices such as surgical cutting guides and biocompatible implants.

Precision reporting is also predicted to drive the market with informed and correlated study interpretation, as is quantitative imaging and radiomics, the latter of which will help give rise to radiogenomics when paired with genomics.

Further opportunities include real-time, image-guided interventions such as interventional oncology; precise oncologic radiation dose therapy for treatment planning and dose measurement applications that enable more precise and adaptive radiation therapy; molecular imaging of theranostic radiotracers; and analytics for imaging study value, quality, and outcomes. Analytics for operations and finances are also anticipated to grow from being able to track just basic key performance indicators (KPIs) related to imaging to solutions that cover entire business intelligence platforms.

A variety of progressing technologies have, or are expected to gain, wide traction within medical imaging, including clinical decision support software, sensors, 3D printing, deep learning and artificial intelligence.

In addition, the analysis lists the stages of the imaging process that are expected to be influenced by these opportunities. They include study ordering, image acquisition, image interpretation, image-based intervention, therapeutic dose radiation, and study impact evaluation.

"The analysis states that Oncology, Metabolic Disease and Neurological Disorders will see the most application potential," said Saha.
