On other companies’ models, “if one channel doesn’t work you send the whole thing in,” said Ken O’Day, vice president of sales and marketing for the company. “With ours, you just unplug the one that’s bad and send it in.”

The device uses a new, patent-pending method of measuring flow, which the company describes in its marketing material as a “dual syringe stepper motor-driven system that provides continuous monitoring of the fluid flow without the need to stop and perform intermittent drains.” The company says this method provides a more realistic test of the flow path and provides more accurate reading, and also allows it to run quietly.

It is also more automated than previous manual systems.

“The biomed hits a button and walks away,” O’Day said.

Like much new testing equipment on the market, the IPA 3400 also has a touch screen display, which gives it a more modern feel that customers are used to, O’Day said.

Datrend Systems
Over the last year, Datrend Systems has released improvements to its line of safety analyzers, adding features to expand their capabilities in areas such as insulation testing and differential leakage current testing.

At the beginning of 2018, the company released a small safety tester called the vPad-Mini. The tester is currently able to be used manually for medical devices that have one or no applied parts, such as dialysis machines and electric beds. With its Android tablet-style user interface, it may eventually include partial or complete automation, said Ron Evans, vice president of product development for Datrend Systems.

The Android interface, which is integral to all of Datrend's newer products, also allows for communication with other devices, such as other test devices, or printers for printing inspection labels after a test, Evans said. Apps are also available to leverage some of Android's built-in features to enhance the user experience.

The Android platform interacts with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and allows users to create a test procedure and add it to the tablet, and then send test results to the CMMS.

“The single largest trend that we have seen is the push to follow either manufacturer's annual test procedures or an alternative maintenance program,” Evans said.
