Brainlab's ExacTrac patient positioning and monitoring technology is now offered as an optional add-on for Elekta's Versa HD linear accelerator.

“Elekta and Brainlab have a history of collaborating to provide innovative solutions to not only the radiosurgery community but also neurosurgery in general,” David Famorca, head of global marketing for linac RT at Elekta, told HCB News.

In September 2016, an agreement was announced to ensure the interoperability of Elekta’s Leksell Vantage Stereotactic System and Brainlab’s Elements Stereotaxy treatment planning and verification software. Then, in June, Brainlab became the authorized distributor of Elekta’s stereotactic solutions for neurosurgery in selected markets.

“The combination of these technologies will help address the market need for progressive solutions that help enhance patient offerings,” said Famorca. “It also advances the care and outcomes of patients undergoing SRT.”

The integration of the Versa HD and ExacTrac technology offers high-definition stereotactic radiosurgery treatments with versatile patient positioning and monitoring. It also provides integrated workflows, comprehensive image guidance, and motion management during coplanar and non-coplanar treatments.

Almost 70 cancer centers around the world have reported the benefits of using ExacTrac in conjunction with the Versa HD. Ludwig-Maximilian University Hospital in Germany has been using the integrated system for over two years.

It allows the radiation oncologists to treat complex tumors that require very precise targeting while also alleviating patient discomfort and reducing treatment time, according to Dr. Claus Belka, director of the department of radiation oncology at LMU.

The integrated solution is currently on display at the American Society for Radiation Oncology annual meeting in San Diego.
