The University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands is the first facility to install the industry's first spectral detector-based CT system, Philips' IQon Spectral CT. The system just received CE mark, but has been approved in the U.S. since November 2014.

"Unlike dual-energy approaches to CT, IQon's detector-based technology provides real-time diagnostic spectral solutions routinely for every patient at low-dose," Sondra Miller, the director of strategic marketing for CT at Philips, told HCB News. "What's critical for our customers is that it's fully integrated with their current workflow."

The IQon Spectral CT generates multiple layers of retrospective, diagnostic data in a single, low-dose scan. With one scan, physicians have enough information to help them make diagnoses.
Only having the patient undergo one scan will likely improve patient satisfaction, which is more important than ever now that the industry is moving toward a more patient-centered care environment.

In addition, providers are also being challenged to increase throughput and quality, while reducing waste at the same time. Providing more data and high-quality images in a single scan can help them do that.

The IQon Spectral CT is currently available to be purchased in 36 countries. There are several other installations underway currently and many more will follow, said Miller.

In September, Philips received FDA approval for a new diagnostic suite for the IQon Spectral CT that could "unlock a new level of flexibility and clinical utility" for it. With the suite, clinicians can access the spectral information in a reading room, on PACS systems, or from a remote location.
