GE Healthcare announced at the Arab Health Exhibition and Congress earlier this week that it has partnered with the UAE Ministry of Health and Abu Dhabi International Medical Services (ADI) to raise the standard of care in the country. The partnership is called Unison and will work to establish a digital radiology center of excellence across 11 hospitals in the UAE.

“Respectively, GE Healthcare and Abu Dhabi International Medical Services, have proven capabilities in providing world class services and cutting edge technology,” said H.E. Awadh Al Ketbi, assistant undersecretary of the UAE Ministry of Health. “We are confident that the new partnership will both enhance quality of care and significantly improve the operational and resource efficiency of our hospitals.”

A network, also called Unison, will be created using a new image exchange system that allows Ministry of Health physicians to view and share diagnostic images with their colleagues across the Emirates no matter where the images were taken.

GE and the Ministry share common goals: to tackle the rising rates of diseases caused by poor lifestyle choices and reduce the overall health care expenditure. Through this radiology outsourcing solution and the development of teleradiology capabilities, the organizations believe they can achieve those goals.

GE will also upgrade and invest in imaging equipment in the hospitals and train the radiologists on how to use it, according to The National. A health care solutions provider called ADI, represents some of the major medical equipment and pharmaceutical companies involved in Unison、 and will be managing the departments.

GE anticipates that, in the larger hospitals involved, as many as 30 patients per day will receive treatment on the new equipment. GE will be paid per patients from the insurance companies that work with the Ministry.

GE also announced at the conference that a new 25,000 square meter, 200-bed hospital called the Al Kafeel Super Specialty Hospital will soon be open in Karbala, Iraq. It will feature an entire suite of technologies including GE’s Innova CT HD system, which provides fine-detail 3-D images of bone and soft tissue.

The hospital will also have advanced ultrasound systems, patient monitors, anesthesia machines and a fully-equipped neonatal intensive care unit. According to GE, that will make it one of the best equipped facilities in Karbala.

The Arab Health Exhibition and Congress is one of the biggest health care shows in the Middle East and is being held at the Dubai World Trade Centre. Over 4,000 companies are currently showcasing their newest innovations to health care professionals from around the world.
