October is breast cancer awareness month

by Philip F. Jacobus, CEO | September 30, 2015
Today I received a note from my good friend Jim Culley reminding me that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Jim and I go back a long way, and when I reflect over the years I am amazed at the progress that has taken place with breast cancer treatment and diagnosis. Actually, some of that credit goes to Jim and his company.

Jim works with Hologic, a company that has had a longstanding position at the forefront of innovations to detect and fight breast cancer.

Steve MacMillan, Hologic's CEO, was even invited to ring the Nasdaq Opening Bell on October 1, down here in the financial district.

I recently read that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetimes and it is the second leading cause of death among women behind lung cancer.

The ACR continues to push for mammo screenings for women under 50 — a standard that has been challenged by the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force. As the two sides state their cases, I'm sure more clarity will emerge and we will be healthier in the future because of it.

As usual, there are no easy answers, but I think we are on the right path to improving outcomes for the people in our lives who will be impacted by this disease. I think we all must know someone who, either directly or indirectly, has had to struggle in their life with breast cancer.

This month lets keep those people close in our thoughts and our hearts.
