Geisinger Health nears opening of new laboratory medicine building

by Gus Iversen, Editor in Chief | January 16, 2015
Pennsylvania's Geisinger Health System will mark its 100th birthday with a new, state-of-the-art, Laboratory Medicine Building.

According to Geisinger, it's outgrown its current facility, which is in the original hospital and serves as the core location for more than 28 Geisinger regional labs, nine rapid response labs, three patient service centers, as well as the network's three medical centers and associated hospitals.

The new building will usher in a new era for Geisinger, one in which laboratory services that had previously been spread out through a network of facilities will all be together under one roof.

The new, modern design will allow for automated workflows and include a mechanical penthouse on the top floor. Geisinger will also be able to expand clinical-care programs in the new location, including genome (DNA) sequencing, specialized tissue typing, and a DNA and Serum Bio-bank to support research in genetics.

The Geisinger Laboratory Medicine Building will utilize a unique space-saving design with vertical storage capacity floor-to-floor through unused ceiling space, and also tuck phone and computer wires out of the way beneath the floor.

The new facility, which is expected to cost approximately $52 million, will be five stories tall and 115,000 square feet. The building is expected to accommodate 370 full-time employees.
