Phil Jacobus talks to Pat Fitzgerald about the past and the future

by Philip F. Jacobus, CEO | November 26, 2014
Pat Fitzgerald
The health care industry is full of interesting people and many of them have remarkable stories about how they got where they are. Pat Fitzgerald has one of those remarkable stories. He tells me he got his first taste of the X-ray business back when he was just a kid on a tricycle.

His father owned Continental X-Ray Corporation and Pat remembers riding his Big Wheel around the factory on weekends. He said one of his earliest memories is looking at some of the more impressive tools they used and knowing this was the business for him.

After college, Pat went to work with Tom Spees at Eureka X-Ray Tube.
Incidentally, he managed to get his old roommate and friend, Dave Kuehn, a job with Eureka as well. Dave, Pat, and Tom went on to work together at Dunlee.

In 1993, Pat moved to Continental, which was bought by Trex Medical Corporation three years later. Pat became President of the Continental division in 1997 and a couple of years later he joined Dunlee to help them grow their X-ray tube business.

That was in 1999 and Pat went on to spend 15 years with Dunlee. He left that company just a few months ago for an exciting new opportunity with the new Richardson Electronics Healthcare Division.

Pat has had a working relationship with Richardson Electronics ever since arriving at Dunlee. Richardson distributed their tubes through their Tubemaster business, which Dunlee, (a division of Philips Healthcare) purchased in early 2002.

After Pat left Dunlee, Ed Richardson approached him with prospects of re-entering the health care space. Since then, Richardson has made some changes to strengthen their market position in diagnostic imaging replacement parts and components, including investments to build and distribute alternative, or replacement, CT tubes.

At RSNA, Richardson will formally launch their new health care division along with a number of interesting new products. In addition to imaging systems and display products serving the PACS market, Richardson Healthcare will also introduce a family of flat panel detector upgrade and retrofit solutions. The company intends to concentrate on providing high value parts and enabling alternative service.

Pat says quality and Richardson's global footprint will set them apart from other third party providers. Everything will be carefully tested before being sent out to the customer. Their plan is to start domestically and move on to be the first truly global alternative parts supplier.

Here's wishing Pat and Richardson Healthcare the best of luck with this new chapter!
