DOTmed News attended the 56th annual meeting of ASTRO, which took place this past week, wrapping up its four-day run at the Moscone Center in San Francisco yesterday.

ASTRO president, Dr. Bruce Haffty, spoke to a packed house during his presidential address. "It was standing room only for Dr. Haffty's address," said DOTmed president and publisher Phil Jacobus, who attended the show. Jacobus said the overflow room was also packed with attendees listening to Haffty's address. The address, titled "Back to the Future" started with a clip from that '80s film, which got a good laugh from the crowd.

Haffty took the audience back to the future with his own history. He talked about being a college basketball player, a model and a musician. He went on to become a biomedical engineer, then applied to medical school and studied oncology at Yale. Today, he works at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital.

In the Q&A with Haffty in the September issue of DOTmed HealthCare Business News, he stated that his personal interest is in the field of breast cancer. It followed that his address delved into the topic. As incoming president, he also had the ability to pick the topic of the presidential symposium, titled, "Changing paradigm in the local regional management of breast cancer."

One aspect he delved into was proton therapy. Haffty said he believes it could be a really good tool for health care if it's something facilities can afford. He also discussed some exciting findings of a recent study published in JAMA about fractionations and cancer treatment.

Other news of note from the show occurred on the show floor, with product introductions from Varian and Siemens along with Accuray's new TomoTherapy H Series, the TomoHDA.

DOTmed News will have additional show recaps in the coming days.
