Medical crisis in Syria continues to grow

by Loren Bonner, DOTmed News Online Editor | November 07, 2013

She told DOTmed News they are in desperate need of everything.

Civilians and children who are trapped inside the country are the ones bearing the worst of the conflict. There are certain areas in Syria where people are physically trapped because of the government blockage and siege. These are the same areas where chemical weapons were used weeks ago. Sahloul has heard reports of starvation and malnutrition and, of course, death in these areas.

And now children in the rural parts of the northeastern part of Syria are contracting polio. The World Health Organization has confirmed 22 cases. This is a part of Syria that has seen some of the worst violence between the opposition and the regime, and international organizations have been blocked for some time by the regime to administer vaccines.

But there is a regional response, which SAMS is a part of, that has sprung up to try and make a way in.

"The actual campaign of vaccinating children hasn't happened yet, but when it does, we'll be part of it," said Sahloul.
