The new Global Center for Health Innovation
in Cleveland, Ohio.
A new center for health and medicine will have its big debut in less than a month.

The Global Center for Health Innovation in Cleveland, Ohio will officially open on October 8th. It's part of a new convention center, which opened this summer, and will act as a hub for medical innovation, education, and commerce. But unlike a convention center, which is by nature a transient place, this one-of-a-kind center will permanently house 20 resident companies that will display and test the latest developments for the health care industry.

Health IT will have a strong presence at the Center. The HIMSS Innovation Center will offer health IT vendors a year-round interoperability testing platform, much like the popular Interoperability Showcase at the Annual HIMSS Conference. The neutral testing and demonstration environment is designed to provide reliable testing, education and certification services for the major interoperability initiatives, such as the Health Exchanges that are being set up under the Affordable Care Act, according to HIMSS.

Besides educating consumers about the value of health IT and solving real-world clinical workflow and financial transactional challenges, Carla Smith, executive vice president of HIMSS, said she hopes the Center will "educate stakeholders on health policy and be the trusted and impartial convener to enable the necessary collaboration of companies that would otherwise be competitors."

Solutions for consumers and health care providers will also be a big focus at the new Center, with entire floors devoted to each.

Other permanent residents at the Center include GE Healthcare, Philips Healthcare, STERIS, Cardinal Health and Cleveland Clinic and University Hospital, among others.
