Q&A with Spectrum Health's president

DMBN: What are some of your goals for the future of the hospital and system?
KS: We set out as a health system to be the national leader for health by 2020. We’re also very focused on providing access to all the populations that we serve throughout the region. That would include our continued emphasis on bringing coronary care to west Michigan. A major goal of ours is to have no one leave the western part of the state for services that could be delivered in west Michigan. We started a heart transplant program almost two years ago, and we’re very proud to say that we’re now the largest heart transplant center in the state. We have recently launched an adult bone marrow transplant program, as well as a lung transplant program. These are services that people have had to travel for upwards of several hours, and when someone needs that level of care, it’s just not the actual procedure itself, but that they’re displaced for many, many months. We want people to be able to stay locally. Finally, we’ve also made tremendous investments in a neuroscience program. We look to have a neuroscience program that draws from multiple states.
