With a background in clinical engineering, scope repair and sales, current NCBA president Alison Lauer updated DOTmed News on the association and how attendees can benefit from the upcoming North Carolina Biomedical Association’s Annual Symposium & Expo in September.

DMBN: How would you define the NCBA’s role?

Lauer: Our mission is to further advance the careers of biomeds in the North Carolina/South Carolina/Virginia area. Our main purpose is to provide education and allow folks to expand their experience. We all learn from each other. I feel like the NCBA is known across the nation for being strong and it’s great to be a part of an organization that has a legacy. In June, we exhibited at the AAMI2012 Conference and Expo in Charlotte, North Carolina. We had so many people come up to our booth and say, “We hear so much about the NCBA and our biomed society is struggling. What’s your secret?”

DMBN: So what is your secret?

Lauer: We’ve got people who have been on the Board since beginning in 1980. So we have kept a strong base and foundation that has helps maintain and grow NCBA. That has really helped us to be successful.

DMBN: As president, what has been your focus?

Lauer: The main focus has been keeping everything in order. When you are managing a volunteer organization with folks scattered throughout the state, it can be a real challenge. Our main thing is our Annual Symposium & Expo. We have to get all the education lined up and all the vendors signed up and then promoting the event. We tell people to come for the education, but stay for the Pig Pickin’. This involves taking a couple of hogs, and putting them on the barbeque. Barbeque is big down here.

DMBN: What are this year’s must see events?

Lauer: Networking and advanced security concepts has been a big thing, so we’ve got classes around that. We are also doing a new GE AMX 4 class, as we are trying to factor in radiology. We’ve got a management track, IT track, biomed track and a radiology track. We get about 50 students at our show every year; it’s a great way for students to network and possibly meet future employers. The National Hot Rod Association’s pro stock motorcycle racers will also be making an appearance in our vendor hall this year.
