RSNA 2011: GE Healthcare rolls out mobile MRI, CT viewer

GE Healthcare announced a new mobile imaging diagnostics platform, the Centricity Radiology Mobile Access 2.0, which has been cleared by the Food and Drug Administration for advanced, diagnostic CT and MR image review.

To give an example of how this product could be useful, Neal Graafsma, a clinical consultant with GE Healthcare, describes a potential situation involving a person who is exhibiting stroke symptoms. Using the Centricity Radiology Mobile Access 2.0, a radiologist can remotely view the patient's CT exam on their mobile device, analyze the venous and arterial flows in the brain, map out the data, and ultimately diagnose the presence of a stroke.

"I can provide my [emergency department] with that immediate critical finding [and have them] start the patient on anti-stroke meds, which of course changes the outcome and quality of life for that patient," he says, referring to himself as the radiologist in this hypothetical scenario. "That's the goal -- getting that information into the hands of those that need it to affect clinical outcomes as quickly as possible."

Graafsma also mentions that the platform enables a user to run five separate applications at the same time. "I don't have to stop what I'm doing on one exam and seize all operations to pick up an ED STAT exam to meet the necessary critical care needs of that patient, and then get back to where I left off," he says.

The Centricity Radiology Mobile Access 2.0 is available on all Apple iOS devices, including the iPad, iPhone and iTouch. It also works with Android 2.2 and above.
